Über riads

A riad (from the Arabic 'ryad', meaning 'garden') is Morocco's most distinctive architectural gift — an inward-facing courtyard house designed for privacy, cool shade and the sound of a fountain at its heart. Stepping through an unmarked medina door, you leave the bustle of the alley and enter a world of tiled arcades, carved cedar and daylight filtered by orange trees.

Many riads are family-owned or locally run. Rooms are unique, breakfasts are often cooked to order, and hosts can be a great source of restaurant recommendations, hammam introductions and last-minute guide bookings.

Warum bei Marhaba buchen

Warum Reisende unsere riads wählen

  • Sleep inside the medina — walk to souks, monuments and food stalls in minutes
  • Family-run: intimate service, unique rooms, personal recommendations
  • Rooftop terraces for sunset drinks, breakfast and, in summer, cooler dinners
  • On-site hammams, plunge pools and cooking-class kitchens at many riads
  • Cooler and quieter than street-facing hotels thanks to traditional tadelakt walls
  • Fair prices with free breakfast, taxes and local hospitality included

Arten von riads

Historic riad

Restored 200–400 year-old mansions, often listed as heritage buildings, with original zellij and carved-plaster ceilings.

Design riad

Contemporary Moroccan design — Berber rugs, mid-century furniture, plunge pools — usually 5–10 rooms and a striking rooftop.

Boutique riad hotel

Larger 8–20 room properties with concierge, in-house restaurant, spa and hammam — the closest to a small luxury hotel.

Private riad rental

Book the whole house for a group or family (typically 4–10 guests), with a private cook, driver and 24-hour service.

Reisetipps

Reisetipps

  • Message your riad in advance to arrange pickup from the nearest car-drop or the airport
  • Bring a small pair of slippers — riad interiors are barefoot-friendly and often have polished tadelakt floors
  • Rooftops can get cool after sunset in winter; ask your host for a wool blanket at breakfast
  • Riads have limited rooms (often 4–8); book 2–3 weeks ahead for spring and autumn stays
  • Tipping in dirhams (10–20 DH) for the porter and daily housekeeping is customary and appreciated
  • For quieter sleep, ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than one bordering the street

Häufige Fragen

Riads — gut zu wissen

What is a riad?+

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central courtyard or garden, usually inside a medina. Rooms face inward, keeping interiors cool and quiet.

Are riads better than hotels in Morocco?+

Riads offer character, personal service and central medina locations. Hotels can be a better fit for pools, gyms and airport-adjacent stays.

Do riads include breakfast?+

Breakfast is common at riads, but inclusions vary by property.

Can suitcases reach a medina riad?+

Many medina riads can help arrange porter assistance or pickup; confirm with the property.

Are riads family-friendly?+

Many riads welcome families and offer connecting rooms or full private rentals. Because of open courtyards and stairs, we recommend the ground-floor rooms for travellers with very young children.

Is there air-conditioning in a riad?+

Many riads offer A/C or ceiling fans; check the property amenities.
