Best for first-timers
Split 4 nights in Seminyak or Canggu with 3 nights in an Ubud jungle villa.
$140-$260 / night
Bali isn't a destination — it's five very different holidays sharing a passport stamp. The most common first-trip mistake is picking one hotel and staying seven nights; the right shape is two bases (usually south-coast + Ubud) with a driver between them. Below is what each region actually delivers, and where to point your booking budget.
For a first trip of 7-10 nights, split between one south-coast base (Seminyak, Canggu or Uluwatu) and Ubud in the interior. A private-driver transfer between the two runs $30-$50 and takes 90-120 minutes.
Add Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands (from Padang Bai or Sanur) for a 2-night island interlude — the water clarity is a different world from the south coast beaches.
Avoid Kuta as a first-timer's base — the traffic, hawkers and stag-party energy age poorly. Seminyak and Canggu deliver the same convenience with far more charm.
Seminyak — the beach-club-and-dinner capital. Ku De Ta, Potato Head, La Brisa. Walkable to sunset spots, best restaurant scene on the island.
Canggu — the surf-and-café district. Design villas, matcha lattes, co-working, the best value in the south. Traffic is grim; base yourself walking-distance to Batu Bolong or Berawa beach.
Uluwatu — clifftop resorts with jaw-dropping sunset views, world-class surf breaks (Padang Padang, Bingin), quieter evenings. The most photogenic pool decks in Asia.
Ubud — jungle, rice terraces, spa and yoga, cultural performances at Puri Saren. Cooler evenings, no beach; the emotional heart of the island.
Nusa Dua — gated resort peninsula. Calm, safe swimming beaches, family-friendly, quieter than the west coast. Best for young kids or a stress-free first trip.
Sanur — old-Bali charm, calm reef-protected lagoon, launchpad for the Nusa Islands. Best for older travellers and slow-paced stays.
Budget ($40-$80): a clean boutique guesthouse in Ubud or Canggu with a pool and breakfast.
Mid-range ($120-$220): a private-pool villa in Seminyak or a jungle-view boutique in Ubud — the sweet spot for most travellers.
Upper mid ($280-$450): a design villa with a full staff, or a five-star resort on the Nusa Dua beach.
Luxury ($700-$2,000+): the clifftop icons — Bulgari, Six Senses Uluwatu, Alila Villas, Four Seasons Sayan. Book direct for return-airport transfers and $100 F&B credits.
April-June and September-October are the sweet spot: dry, warm (28-31°C), long evenings, hotels not yet at peak rates.
July-August is dry-season peak: busiest of the year and 30-40% price premium; book villas 3-4 months ahead.
November-March is the green season: warm daily downpours (usually mid-afternoon, over in 60 minutes) with the lowest rates of the year and dramatically emptier beaches.
Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence, usually March) shuts the whole island — no flights, no traffic, no lights after dark. Beautiful if planned for, disruptive if you didn't know.

Split your nights: 3-4 in Seminyak or Canggu for beach clubs and restaurants, then 3-4 in Ubud for jungle, rice paddies and spa. Add Uluwatu or Nusa Lembongan if you have more than 7 nights.
Seminyak has the polished restaurant and beach-club scene and better hotels. Canggu has a younger, café-driven, surf-focused vibe and better value villas. If it's your first trip, choose Seminyak; if you're under 35 or a returning visitor, choose Canggu.
Budget: $40-$80. Mid-range private-pool villa: $120-$220. Upper mid design villa: $280-$450. Luxury clifftop resort: $700-$2,000+. Peak-season (July-August, Christmas-New Year) adds 30-50%.
Yes — one of the safest destinations in Southeast Asia. Standard precautions: use registered taxis or Grab/GoJek, wear a helmet if you rent a scooter (Bali traffic is unforgiving), and drink bottled or filtered water.
Most travellers get a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for $35 valid for 30 days, extendable once. Bring the exact fee in USD or IDR and a passport with 6+ months validity.
Pre-booked private transfers are $18-$35 to Seminyak/Canggu, $30-$50 to Ubud, $25-$40 to Uluwatu. Airport taxis are marginally cheaper but the queue after a red-eye is brutal — pre-book.
Not for a first trip. Grab and GoJek are cheap, ubiquitous and safer. Consider a scooter only in Canggu or Ubud if you're a confident rider and always wear a helmet.
