Grand Canyon South Rim: The Complete 2026 Guide

The South Rim is the Grand Canyon almost everyone means when they say 'the Grand Canyon' — the viewpoints, the free shuttle, the historic lodges on the edge and the two great corridor trails down into the gorge. Below is how to plan your visit, where to stay for sunrise and sunset, and how to get there from Las Vegas, Phoenix or Flagstaff.

How long you need at the South Rim

Half-day (from a Vegas or Sedona tour): Mather Point, Yavapai Geology Museum, a walk on the Rim Trail and Hermit Road viewpoints. Enough for a first impression, not enough to hike below the rim.

One full day: sunrise at Mather or Yavapai, a short descent on the Bright Angel or South Kaibab trail (turn back at 1.5 Mile Resthouse or Ooh Aah Point), the free Hermit Road shuttle to Hopi and Mohave points for sunset.

Two days: add the 25-mile Desert View Drive east to the Watchtower, Tusayan Ruin and Grandview. This is the day most visitors skip and shouldn't.

Three-plus days: rim-to-river day hike on the Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point (12 miles round-trip, only October-April), or a mule ride to Phantom Ranch (book 15 months ahead by lottery).

Where to stay: inside vs outside the park

Inside the park (Grand Canyon Village): El Tovar (1905 historic), Bright Angel Lodge, Kachina and Thunderbird (rim-view rooms), Maswik and Yavapai (forest). Book 6-13 months ahead through Xanterra; nothing beats stepping out for sunrise.

Tusayan (7 miles south, 10 minutes to the entrance): the biggest cluster of chain and mid-range hotels — Best Western Premier Grand Canyon Squire Inn, The Grand Hotel, Holiday Inn Express. Book through our licensed partner for live rates.

Williams (60 miles / 1 hour south, on Route 66): base for the Grand Canyon Railway day trip. Best value and the most character (Grand Canyon Railway Hotel, Route 66 diners).

Flagstaff (80 miles / 1.5 hours south): a proper mountain town with the best restaurants and breweries in northern Arizona. Add a Sedona or Sunset Crater day on the way in or out.

Getting there from Las Vegas, Phoenix and Sedona

From Las Vegas: 275 miles / 4.5 hours via Kingman and Williams. A pre-booked private transfer is the easiest way to skip the rental-car queue if you are day-tripping — Kiwitaxi routes Las Vegas to Grand Canyon Village door-to-door.

From Phoenix Sky Harbor: 230 miles / 3.5 hours north on I-17 through Sedona and Flagstaff. Combine with a Sedona overnight.

From Flagstaff: 80 miles / 1.5 hours — the shortest and most scenic access.

The North Rim (a separate 5-hour drive) is closed from mid-October to mid-May and is not covered by this guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need at the Grand Canyon South Rim?

One full day is the minimum to see sunrise and sunset and walk a short way below the rim. Two days lets you add the 25-mile Desert View Drive. Three or more is needed for a rim-to-river day hike or a mule trip.

When is the best time to visit the South Rim?

April-May and September-October: mild rim temperatures (10-22°C), open shuttles, no snow. July-August are hot below the rim and busy on top; late December-February bring snow and the quietest, most magical views.

How do I get to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas?

275 miles / 4.5 hours by car via Kingman and Williams. A pre-booked private transfer is the easiest door-to-door option; full-day guided tours from the Strip run daily. Do not confuse the South Rim with Grand Canyon West / Skywalk, which is a different (2.5-hour) drive.

Can I stay inside the park?

Yes — Grand Canyon Village has six lodges (El Tovar, Bright Angel, Kachina, Thunderbird, Maswik, Yavapai) run by Xanterra. Book 6-13 months ahead; last-minute cancellations do open up. Otherwise stay in Tusayan (10 minutes), Williams (1 hour) or Flagstaff (1.5 hours).

Do I need a car inside the park?

No — the free park shuttle serves the Village, Hermit Road and Kaibab Trail routes. In summer, Hermit Road is closed to private cars entirely. Bring a car only for Desert View Drive and for reaching the park.

Is a mule ride or Phantom Ranch stay bookable last-minute?

Rarely. Mule rides and Phantom Ranch cabins are on a 15-month advance lottery through Xanterra. Corridor backpacking permits are on a monthly lottery through recreation.gov. Plan a year ahead.
